Maasai Mara National Reserve
This morning was an early one as we are headed off to Maasai Mara National Reserve via chartered plane. The Mara, as it is locally known, is a 580 square mile reserve located in the southwest corner of Kenya and boarders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
We landed mid-morning at Keekorok Airport in the middle of The Mara. It is called an airport only because you can land a small plane on a dirt landing strip. The only facilities at the “airport” consisted of a building for restrooms and a guard shack.
Once we were loaded into our Land Cruisers, we were on our way to our home for the next three nights, Mara Sentrim. As we traveled, it wasn’t long until we had our first wildlife siting of a Spotted Hyena and her cubs. After arriving at our resort, we quickly settled in, had lunch, and we were off for our first official game drive. The next few hours flew by as it seemed like everywhere you looked, you saw another wild animal. We got to add two more to our Big Five list, seeing African Elephants and Cape Buffalo.
I can’t wait until tomorrow. As our guide, Masonda says, “Expect the unexpected”!
